Since 2013, numerous medical studies have shown a link between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and/or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children.

Children with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors, or be overly active. Other symptoms of ADHD include squirming or fidgeting, talking too much, forgetting or losing things, and difficulty getting along with others.

Children with ASD may have problems with social communication and show repetitive behaviors or restricted interests. Examples of social communication and social interaction related to ASD include avoiding or not maintaining eye contact; not showing facial expressions like happy, sad, angry and surprised by 9 months of age; using few or no gestures by 12 months of age; and not sharing interests with others by 15 months of age.

In 2022, parents of children with ADHD and ASD brought a legal action against retailers that sell acetaminophen. In the lawsuit, parents allege that retailers failed to warn pregnant mothers about the risks of prenatal ingestion of acetaminophen, and as a result, their babies developed ADHD and/or ASD.
